After 21 years Ferrari finally won what Jody Scheckter had been struggling to a chieve for the team: the longed for and coveted Formula 1 World Championship title. Toyota started 2002 with very realistic expectations in their first Formula I season. Their clear aim was to see both Toyota TF102 cars qualify and stay in the races to the end. Two years of sound experience with the Mugen-Honda engines and 3rd place with 61 points in the 1999 constructors' standings gave the Jordan Team grounds for great optimism in the 2000 season. However, technical problems prevented a repetition of the good performances achieved in the previous year and in particular difficulties with the new, lighter gearbox repeatedly prevented them from reaching the chequered flag. BMW Williams started the 2001 season with high hopes resting on them. After the surprise 3rd place in the previous year, the Anglo-German team planned to defend and improve on this position. In addition to the completely new, 820 bhp V-10 engine, the two drivers were more than equal to the task. The German driver, already in his third year with Williams, contributed three Grand Prix wins, including Hockenheim, to the remarkable result, with a total of 49 points. Juan Pablo Montoya, the winner in Monza, also made an impressive debut in Formula 1 with his risk- taking style. The BMW-Williams team confidently held third place with 80 points overall. After Ferrari let it be known at the start of the '97 season that they did not wish to do the world championship circuit until '98, Michael Schumacher in particular provided some breathtaking racing and before the last Grand Prix in Jerez, Spain, he was in the lead one point ahead of the Canadian Jacques Villeneuve. Schumacher won the start duel, led up to the 47th lap and then shattered the dreams of all the German and Italian fans. In an overtaking maneuver by Villeneuve the Ferrari touched the Williams Renault and withdrew. Villeneuve won the world championship and the collision disqualified Schumacher for the whole season. The Irishman Eddie Irvine ended the season in eight position with 24 points. The 126 promised good prospects for Ferrari in the '82 season, on the one hand due to the 580 hp 6 cylinder engine, on the other due to the exceptional driver Gilles Villeneuve who took over from Niki Lauda at Ferrari at the end of the seventies. The season was also marked by internal wrangling within the Ferrari team when Didier Pironi, contrary to the agreed strategy, beat his team colleague Gilles Villeneuve into second place at Imola. The season was overshadowed by the serious crash during the final training at Zolder in Belgium in which Gilles Villeneuve was catapulted out of the vehicle. At the end of the year Ferrari did in fact win the constructor's title but the world championship was lost.
