Nowadays when motor manufacturers claim to have invented the van, transporter or box-type truck, the over-forties know that's nonsense. Actually there has been only one name since the fifties: the VW Bus. In 1947 a Dutch businessman, Ben Pon, suggested to VW a new vehicle: the transporter. Some prototypes were developed, but the aerodynamics of these vehicles were extremely poor. Then, in the wind tunnel, a third front end was developed for the model, the shape of which ensured that that airflow broke away, not at the front but at the rear, which improved the drag coefficient. The sports racer officially designated the Porsche Carrera GTS was built in 1963, but made its name under the works designation of 904 GTS. Porsche produced over 100 examples of this vehicle according to the homologation conditions for the Grand Tourismo Class. The 904 had numerous sporting successes, including 1st place in the Targa Florio in April 1964, which gave Porsche their fifth victory in this Sicilian classic. In 1955 when Jaguar made known that they were withdrawing from racing, the works still had some examples of the successful D type racer that had won at Le Mans three times in succession. In order to dispose of these 25 D types at a profit, in 1957 they were converted into roadsters and given the name XK SS. This light car weighing 910 kg drove like a normal roadster but offered the state-of-the-art technology of the D type.
